I just watch that crash test video for that 78 Harvester and it got me curious about how my van did. I'm so screwed if I get into a crash. Mines older and has less airbags, too.

That is... troubling
Is it me, or does some portion of the seat break?

Inb4 "don't crash it then."
Seriously though, they set these kinds of tests up for the worst-case scenario. In all likelihood any wreck you get into will be much less severe, so worrying about it won't do anything but turn your hair grey. Coming from a pizza delivery driver, all you need to do is keep your head on a swivel and eyes up and you'll be perfectly fine.

"We're sorry, there was no crash test performed by the IIHS for the '1991 Mazda B2200'"
Uhhh.....well I guess I'm fucked.
0 Air Bags. What are crumple zones?
I just gotta not crash the truck I guess.
The Cobalt Crash test was reassuring at least...

The one for my mom's Vue made me feel safer about driving it, at least.

Not really worst case scenario. This is the same as hitting a vehicle that weighs the same as yours with 40% overlap at 35 mph. Pretty much a typical collision on a two lane road where a vehicle crosses the center line. The only thing going for OP is that his Astro is probably heavier than most things he might hit.

I'd rather be in that as opposed to the Cobalt.
Look up the cobalt crash test.... the roof buckles up on it. Although it looks pretty safe. still nervous about a wreck haha

The amount of metal that would require to build would pay for me to get a better, safer form of transport.

At least the Astro probably weighs more than most anything that is going to hit you. If you are driving the vehicle with more mass that can greatly improve your outcome.

It could be a lot worse, but yeah, a buckling roof is never good.

I wish there was a crash test of my Mazda....I think its too old for regulations on the trucks though

That's very true, but knowing that there's a possibility of it happening is enough to worry me more than it should..

Dear lord I've always heard these were unsafe but shit that's bad. My dad used to have a 1990 Astro and when I was a wee lad we went on trips in it. Then he used it as a work van. Then he traded it in and it was worth basically nothing because "The brake lines looked like corn flakes". I'm very glad he never crashed it.

Imagine this with NO AIRBAGS and around 10-15 years older than the test trucks....

You are correct, what I meant was more along the lines of the rarity of head-on collisions as compared to rear-endings or simply running off the road. This is what I was basing that off of:

Obviously not trying to be douchey here, just an explanation of my reasoning.

I honestly think I have daily driven more cars without air bags as opposed to cars with Airbags....
I'm not worried about it anyways, I've been in plenty of accidents to know how to react.
Let your body go limp, keep limbs in car. Don't move til the car stops moving.

thanks, now I'm spending all kinds of time searching old crash videos.
What year did they start making these videos? I was only able to find their youtube channel, which seems to stop about 1975 or so. (I'm looking for 1973 full size/B body GMs)

It looks like the seat slid forward in it's track, so you are getting squashed by the weight of the seat in addition to crashing. Or maybe it's to reduce the deceleration rate during the impact?

I dunno when they started making the videos, and I looked for a B body but I couldn't find anything.

It might be a "safety feature" or they just used such cheap metal in the locking mechanism for the track that it snapped under the force of the impact.

I get that you aren't trying to be douchy, but I do think you are underestimating the frequency of head on collisions. Neither of the sources you gave had a good number for head on collisions. I dug around in the NHTSA numbers and found this for passenger cars. From the FARS (Fatal Analysis Reporting System) data, for fatal crashes involving passenger cars hitting a moving vehicle 31.4% of fatal crashes have front as the initial point of contact.
Single vehicle crashes have front as the initial point of contact 61.8% of the time. And multi-vehicle crashes have front as the initial point of contact 57.0% of the time. That data is confusing me since the same data seems to give two different numbers for multi-vehicle crashes where the initial point of impact is the front.
Either way, fatal crashes where the initial point of impact is the front of the vehicle are the most common fatal crashes. If I'm reading the data correctly they account for 58.9% of fatal crashes when you combine single and multi-vehicle crashes.

Missed the edit time, so I need to add a couple things. The NHTSA data is for 2011, as that was the latest I could find.
I also found some 2012 data from IIHS . According to the IIHS:
Frontal impacts accounted for 52 percent of passenger vehicle occupant deaths in 2012. Side impacts accounted for another 26 percent of passenger vehicle occupant deaths.
